Since I started going to school to become a nutrition counselor, I've noticed a big shift in the countries view on food. Ever since the movie, Food,Inc came out, consumers started realizing the food they were eating was basically killing them. The "corn" that the cows eat makes the cows obese and inevitably makes us obese as well.(Along with high fructose corn syrup but that's another day!) That's why when the FDA discourages eating more than 4 oz of meat because increases our chances of heart disease, it's because they are talking about their meat. What happened to just eating cows and chickens the way we were intended to-naturally? They are born, they eat grass or clover, and when they are old enough and the right size, they go to slaughter. The end. When did we think that bulking them up with a substance that is loosely called 'corn' but is really a scientific project. Logically it doesn't make sense.
But there is good news. Movies like Food, Inc, King Corn and with the help of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, eventually the market will shift and you will start seeing more foods with the word 'organic' on it. (Food grown without pesticides; grown without artificial fertilizers; grown in soil whose humus content is increased by the additions of organic matter, grown in soil whose mineral content is increased by the application of natural mineral fertilizers; has not been treated with preservatives, hormones, antibiotics, etc.)
I am just about 87% all organic. I go to the Farmers Marked almost every Sunday and buy-asparagus, blueberries, carrots, celery, lettuce and eggs. Unfortunately you can't get EVERYthing there so then I have to hop in my car over to Trader Joe's to finish. But TJs doesn't have Coconut Milk or taco shells, or whole yogurt (forget the non-fat-eat the fat!). Then its off to the most overpriced store in the world-Whole Foods. Yes it's alot of traveling, its alot of prepping (I have to shave and cut carrots for my boyfriend every week), but in the long run, what's it all worth? ALOT!
Whole foods are where its at. If you think about it, it's what our ancestors ate and they were no where near as sick as we are today. In fact, a new study came out that this generation will be the first to die before our parents. Really? My mom, who grew up on rich butter, cream and grass fed milk as well as home made bread and chickens she killed with her own hands, is going to out live me? Yet we are told meat is bad for us.
I may have to stop here before my blood pressure starts to rise! It's just the beginning folks. I have alot to say and I hope you find it interesting. IF you disagree or agree, I'd love read your comments.

My grocery shopping takes FOREVER each week b/c I have to do the same thing as you--farmer's market, TJs and Whole Foods. It's worth it to keep HFCS out of our diet (for the most part), but ugh! I agree; it should be easier and more common sense to eat healthfully.
